Gorton, Samuel

Gorton, Samuel
(c. 1592–1677)
   Denomination Founder.
Gorton was born in Lancashire, England, but emigrated to Massachusetts in 1637. He quickly came into conflict with the authorities for his religious views. He taught that immortality was not a necessary attribute of the human soul, but depended for its existence on the behaviour of the individual; he also cast doubt on the nature and existence of the Trinity. He founded the colony of Shawomet, which was renamed Warwick in honour of the Earl of Warwick, who had guaranteed its religious liberty. His followers were called Gortonites and the sect survived into the eighteenth century.
